Environmental training in Laos
Asian Trails in Laos is supporting a project from the GreenCARE Fund to give Lao teenagers from urban schools the opportunity to discover their natural heritage and promote natural resources conservation.
Forests cover two thirds of Laos’ land area, sheltering myriads of animal and plant species. The country counts 21 National Protected Areas, covering 16% of the territory. However, Lao forests, wildlife and environment continue to be under threat due to slash-and-burn agriculture, uncontrolled fires or illegal logging. The importance of forests is little known among the country population, especially in urban centres.
Students from 10 to 18 years-old will be taken on two-day tours in Tad Leuk, in Phou Khao Khouay next January, which will include fun activities mixed with lectures and educational games. Lectures aim to tackle issues such as forest management and the meaning of establishing protected areas and wildlife trade.
