Gorilla tracking - Rwanda
Kuoni Destination Management East Africa can take you to one of the most exciting and memorable experiences in the wilds of Africa. The gorilla tracking tour takes place in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanic mountains found in East Africa, along the northern border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
A UNESCO World Heritage Sites inscribed in 1979, the Virungas are home to the two remaining global populations of the famed Mountain Gorilla. One is found in the Virungas of Central Africa and the other in Rwanda, in the Parc National de Volcans, located in the north-west part.
On this tour, you will drive on the edge of Parc National des Volcans. Your trek will vary in length and will commence at about 2,000 meters of altitude in the upper slopes of the volcanoes. The park’s guides brief on the gorilla etiquette. After locating your assigned group, you will spend one hour in their company before retracing your steps down the volcanoes. The trek to find gorillas can be quite short, but on most days may involve an hour or two of rough hiking.
The tour includes a city tour of the capital, Kigali, with a visit to the genocide museum; a grim reminder of the massacres during the 1994 genocide.
